Satellite P15-S420 power issues

hello all.

i recently bought a used satellite P15-S420. first thing i did was reformat with a new copy of windows xp that i bought a couple years ago and never used.  next, i downloaded and installed the drivers for it from this website (on that note, i did this about a month ago, and now i can't seem to find the model number here anymore. do they not host these drivers anymore?).

ok, first problem is it freezes when shutting down. it will go through the shutdown process almost all the way, but when it gets to "windows is now shutting down" it freezes. i can still shut it down by pressing and holding the power button for about five seconds, so this problem hasn't caused me a whole lot of stress yet.

second problem; a strange power issue. when i plug in the ac cord both leds on the front light up (one showing that the ac cord is plugged in and one showing either the battery charging [orange], or the battery fully-charged [green]). if i then open power management it will show that as well, the ac cord as the power source and the battery charging. however, when the battery reaches 100% charge, the led light indicating whether the battery is charging or full will go off, but the one indicating the ac cord plugged in stays on. when this happens the power management still shows the ac cord as the power source, but the battery is discharging. i then either have to restart the computer. or if that doesn't work, shut it down for a while, unplug the ac cord, and then restart it later. i've let it run down to see what would happen, and it discharges all the way to zero and shuts down as if it has no power supply. i have restarted in safe mode, and things seem to work fine there, so i'm guessing it is a driver or software issue. when i remove the battery and try to run it purely on the ac cord it runs fine but will randomly shutdown as if it was accidently unplugged.

Re: Satellite P15-S420 power issues

This is a UK item.  Most older models are archived, but still accessible.  http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com

For the freeze aspect-has anything been added to the unit , then check Device Manager to ensure no 'error' exclamation point identified.  Check the memory module to ensure click seated in place. Check the fan and exhaust port for signs of debris please. Pull out any external devices. to isolate the concern.  Reomvoe the battery to see if problem continues.

1. you unplug the AC adapter and run the laptop on battery power? Will it freeze when the AC adapter is unplugged?
2.Test in Safe Mode? Will if freeze up in Safe Mode?
Do you know if the laptop freezes only in Windows? Access the BIOS setup menu and test in there. Will it freeze up while running the BIOS setup menu?

second problem identified;  battery needs replacing is first impression, but there could be something occurring on the motherboard. Take to an authorized service provider for a diagnostic.

Re: Satellite P15-S420 power issues

I had to resolder the power connector onto the motherboard.

The positive and negative solder connections were cracked on mine!
