Does your external enclosure have an AC adapter or a second connection for USB? If not, it's likely that your issue is power related, not driver related. The laptop may not be capable of delivering the required power through a single USB port.

If you are having the issue occur when the external drive is powered by AC, then it isn't a USB power issue. That would be applicable if the drive was drawing power only from the USB port.
It's doubtful that it is a USB driver issue, but if you want to, force Windows to reinstall them by going to Device Manager, deleting the USB entries and rebooting. Windows will 'detect new hardware' and reinstall the drivers.
Some things to do:
- Check the connections between the drive and the enclosure, and the USB connection between the enclosure and the computer.
- Connect the external drive to another computer and see if you can make the problem occur there.
