Hi,
Like most people on this page I am a new to the forum and have a problem I need assistance with. Apologies if I am posting this in the wrong place, just let me know.
After a defrag on my Toshiba P200 1bk the laptop would not start up. When I switch on it offers me the option of Repair, however this leads to 'the installed program cannot start' and the only option is to shut down.
I have tried safe mode, safe mode with command prompt...I never get to command prompt, it goes through the start up cycle and I eventually get to the 'installed program cannot start....'
I am at a loss, any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Turn the computer on and immediately press and hold the F8 key.
On the Advanced Boot Options menu, choose Repair Your Computer.
When you reach the System Recovery Options menu, choose Startup Repair.
If that doesn't do the trick, go back to the System Recovery Options menu and do a System Restore.
If that doesn't fix things either, go back to the System Recovery Options menu, choose Command Prompt, and follow the directions here

Hi Jerry
Thanks for your reply.
The problem is it wont let me get to the command prompt.
When I turn on the computer it immediately offers me the options of 'repair' or 'start up in normal mode'.
If I choose repair, it gives me the 'installed program cannot start'.
If I press F8 and select any of the safe mode options including Command Prompt I still end up at this message.
I have tried 'last successful reboot' option and I get the same thing.......

Then you're reduced to restoring the hard disk to its original factory-new contents using Toshiba recovery media.
Do you have important files to retrieve first?

Hi,
Only some photos which I would be quite desperate to keep if possible.
Is it possible?
Regards
Matt

Is Toshiba recovery media the disc that came with the laptop?

Yes, Matt.
Two ways of reaching the data if your hard drive is alive.
(1) Download a free CD that boots to another operating systems or to a preinstall environment.
A popular one is Ubuntu. There's also KNOPPIX, Bart's, UBCD4Win, SystemRescueCd, and probably others.
(2) Remove the hard drive, mount it in an external enclosure, and access it from another computer.
