I tried to use the recovery DVD to recover my system, however while it was in the process, the laptop suddenly shut off. Now when I turn it on, it shows the "Toshiba" screen, then goes to a black screen with the text "Invalid system disk Replace the disk, and then press any key." How can I fix this?

Rerun the recovery process. If the laptop shuts down again, you probably have an overheating issue and need to fix that first.

And post your system specs if you do post back. We need to know specifically which Model you have to provide the best support. It's quite possible that there is some problem specific to your model. Without know the model we can't point you to any of those possible scenarios.
If you don't bother to post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

I've tried to run the restore process again. I've tried holding the "C" key while it starts up, like the recovery disk cover says to do. I've also tried pushing F12 and selecting the CD/DVD drive for it to boot from, but it still says "Invalid system disk...."
The laptop had been having battery problems, and the battery would not charge. It was plugged in when it shut itself off though, but I have it on a little stand so air can get under it, so I don't know if it was overheating or what. I had also blown a bunch of dust out of it with a compressed air can before the problem happened. Since then, I took the battery out then put it back in. A light now indicates that the battery is charged, and I even ran it with the AC unplugged.
It is a Toshiba Satellite P15-S479
Thanks for your help

Is it recognizing the Recovery CD and booting from it or does that give the Invalid System Disk error?
If it won't boot from the System Recovery Disk try rinsing it under lukewarm running water and patting it dry with a clean, dry, soft cloth. It's possible that the recovery disk is dirty or scratched. If it's scratched take it to your local Video store to see if they will run it through their resurfacing machine. That might cost you a couple of bucks, but if you are a regular customer they will probably do it for free.

It won't boot from the recovery DVD, it just shows the invalid system disk error. The disk is not damaged; it worked the first time I ran it, and it began the recovery process, but then the computer shut off, causing the invalid system disk problem.
When I start the computer, I can push F2 to go to Setup (PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility). Is there anything I can do in there to fix the problem?

You could reorder the Recovery Disc set from Toshiba (800) 457-7777 for a small charge. Positive that disk set is for your unit, and ensure disk 1/2 is inserted in their order[if you have a dual set]. When unit turns on, battery out, does the fan spin, hear the HDD hum, lights on the panel?
