The problem is that Windows XP does not have native SATA support so the XP install disk doesn't see the drives on a SATA controller. Your XP disk also needs to be at a Service Pack 1 level or higher. You have two options to do this.
1: Integrate the SATA drivers into the disk as outlined in this guide. You will need to substitute the AMD SATA drivers for the Intel and JMicron drivers used in the tutorial as your system uses an AMD chipset.
2: Go into Bios Setup, look under the ADVANCED tab and change from AHCI to COmpatability mode (this only works if your model has this option, not all do). Once you have finished installing XP, install all of the drivers, then reset the bios back to AHCI mode for optimum performance.
I don't know where to find XP drivers for that system though. Toshiba is only providing a couple of the drivers here in the US. The European site is down for maintenance at the moment so I can't check there. When it comes back up you can check there to see if they have them (they often have XP drivers the US doesn't have). You'll probably need to look for drivers for an L500D with the short name of PSLM0E. If they don't have them you'll need to determine what all of the chipsets you have and go to each of the manufacturers website to download drivers (AMD, Realtek, Marvel, etc.)
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

Do we actually know what are the correct drivers for this model to enable SATA under XP? I downloaded the South Bridge drivers from the AMD/ATI site, but I don't think those are the correct ones. Wonder if anyone has had sucess with this...

Thank you so much for pointing out XP needs to be SP1 or higher. Even after setting SATA mode to "compatibility" in BIOS, my original version XP install CD would not properly recognize the hard drive at all. But using XP w/ SP2 works great! I just wish I had seen your tip a lot sooner! So this little tip is CRITICAL, and not metioned in ANY other website or forum I have found.
So again, many thanks to "cee_64"!!!

No problem. It is mentioned on a LOT of support sites and forums, but one needs to know what they are looking for to find it.

Hi everyone.
I'm sorry for bringing such an old thread up. First of all I wanted to thank everyone giving advice in these forums.
I've got Satellite L505D-S5965 and XP, too. Still I cannot find any drivers for its DVD-rom or DVD-ram, whatever. If anybody got an idea where to look for them, I'd appreciate that much. It can be closed and opened. I even made it visible in the Device Manager with http://www.csd.toshiba.com/content/support/bulleti
All I could find in the Internet was that its model name must be Mats hita (in one word, of course) UJ880ES and that Mats hita is the same as Panasonic.
And SATA drivers for XP would be really, really nice. I set Compatibility mode for now, but I believe it'd be much better to have proper SATA drivers. And I haven't got even a name or anything to search for it.
Thank you in advance.
P.S. And if you know anything similar to the Eco Utility working under XP, that could be nice, too. I enjoyed this app when having Vista. But DVD-rom and SATA drivers are much more important.
