Re-starting/ Intel

As a not tech-savvy college student with limited resources to get my computer fixed ( I don't think there's a help center within 100 miles of my campus), please bear with me and let me know if you've been able to fix a similiar problem:

1st- Earlier in the week the DVD player stopped working and would just eject any discs.

2nd- Unexpected shut downs happened OFFEN.

3rd- Norton Virus Protection had been expired and I rescribed, however, I had yet to run a full scan after rescribing to Norton because that almost seemed to prompt another unexpected shutdown.

4th- After turning it back I had Windows "Check for a Solution" and that brought me to a website saying something Intel had stopped working properly. I attempted to download the solution, however I don't think the download completed, as after the last step to re-start, no "download complete" or anything similiar happened.

5th- After the last self- shut down, the computer will turn on, the QOSMIO screen will come up like normal, the computer seems to want to bring itself up to the black "Unexpected Shutdown, Start Windows normally screen...", however its stays black with the exception of one white blinking dash in the corner.

Someone advised me to kept hitting F8 after turning it on so I would bring it to the safemode/start windows normally screen, yet that doesn't work either.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Try it this way. Turn the computer on and immediately press and hold down the F8 key.

You should be able to reach the Advanced Boot Options menu.

Re: Re-starting/ Intel

Unless you have access to a Windows Vista installation disc, the only other way to reach Windows Recovery Environment is to download a recovery disc from NeoSmart.

   Windows Vista Recovery Disc Download

That requires jumping through lots of hoops.
