USB device can perform faster

I have a a215-6804 Satellite running Windows 7 and upgraded to 4GB ram.

I am having an issue with an external hard drive and the USB. It is an Iomega Prestige 1.5TB External Hard Drive model# 34474.

When I plug it into the USB and apply power, I get a message that this device can perform faster if plugged into a USB 2.0 hub. This laptop only has USB 2.0 and has the current BIOS and drivers.

I have consulted the Omega website, but no help there.

Is this a power issue or am I missing something?

Thanks

Re: USB device can perform faster

The computer probably thinks it is using an older 1.1 version of USB port. Go into the Bios and Disable the USB Legacy mode. The USB Legacy mode is for older, slower devices like keyboards, mice and floppy disk drives. Save & Exit the Bios. After the computer is on and back in Windows, reattach the external hard drive and try again.

Re: USB device can perform faster

The bios was already set at legacy mode "disabled." I toggled between enable and disable and rebooted both times, with no luck.

I have use external USB based hard drives without any issues. I agree my laptop is recognizing my external hard drive as an older version of USB, but why?

Satellite A215-S6804

You can shut off that inappropriate message as follows.

Open Device Manager (devmgmt.msc) and expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. Double-click each Universal Host Controller and check Don't tell me about USB errors on the Advanced tab.

Re: USB device can perform faster

That would remove that annoying buble, but my hard drive is still running at a usb 1.1 speed.

my hard drive is still running at a usb 1.1 speed.

Are you certain of that?

The data transfer would barely creep along at 1/40 the speed of USB 2.0.

Re: USB device can perform faster

I am almost positive. I barely get 200 K/bs when I upload or download from the hard drive.

Re: USB device can perform faster

It happens sometimes. The USB controller is built to handle both 2.0 and 1.1.

Try another USB device to establish whether the trouble is in the computer or in the device>
