After correctly shutting down laptop, I attempted to turn it back on later and Windows won't boot. It will not even allow start up in safe mode. After stopping auto restart, I got blue screen with error STOP: 0x000000E3 (0x80558BE0, 0x84FCA3E8, 0x00000000, 0x00000002). I was able to use an enclosure to retrieve my files from the hard drive with no problems. Does anyone know if this can be fixed without using the recovery disk or getting a new hard drive? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

STOP: 0x000000E3
That's a tough one! Very little help here.
Bug Check 0xE3: RESOURCE_NOT_OWNED
Try running chkdsk x: /r on it from the other computer while it's in the enclosure (KB315265).
(If the hard drive were affected, you would not have been able to retrieve your files.)

Hey! I did the scan, but it is still doing the same thing. Do you think the recovery disk will work? That is a last resort for me.

I don't know any reason why not.
If you can access the files and run chkdsk, then the hard drive must be okay.
