Jumping around on screen while typing

When I am typing on my Toshiba Satellite 305 the cursor will jump to a different location on the screen and my typing continues in that unwanted location - what is causing this and how do I fix it?  I have an external Logitech mouse so I don't want to use the touchpad - is that part of my problem?

Mine does that also, whether or not I use the logitech mouse or the touchpad.

Hope to find out also what to do!

Re: Jumping around on screen while typing

I found the answer wandering around in the Help arena - here are the steps I followed and they worked:

Start > Control Panel > Mouse > Advanced Tab > Tapping settings > check the "Disable tapping during key input" box > Apply > and OK yourself out to the main window.  Then try typing and see if it's better.

Re: Jumping around on screen while typing

Im getting exactly the same issue with my M30 laptop and windows 7 RC.

Despite disabling and uninstalling almost everything i can think of its still happening.

Very annoying too.

Im not even using a touchpad driver - im using the default microsoft ps mouse driver.

So it does not have an advanced tab for the mouse.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as its driving me mad. I happens entirely randomly but usually when i am actively typing. Til now i had not worked out if its a keyboard or a touchpad issue. I upgraded everything i could think of on the laptop - tonight i even upgraded the bios - yet to see if that makes any difference.

This is not a fix but something that you guys can do. Turn off the touchpad when typing by using Fn+F9. It's possible that your wrists are brushing against it. Turn it on again once you're done. It's inconvenient but it might work for the meantime, though. :smileyvery-happy:

Dont think its my wrists brushing against it ... the laptop is four years old and was/is running windows XP without this issue.

The issue only appears in Windows 7 which suggests its not hardware and its not me touching the touchpad:-(

My laptop has Vista and my associate has Windows 7 - and we both found the fix I listed earlier solved the problem - were you able to try it?

Last night I installed a Generic Win7/vista touchpad driver from synaptics.com and also installed touchfreeze for good measure. Not entirely convinced that touchfreeze is actually doing as expected as it seems i can use keyboard and touchpad simultaneously....

Anyway installed this late last night and not had any real chance to test it. Will report back when ive tested more or the issue  re-occurs.

Well, the generic driver seems to have brought back an earlier issue which is perioic keyboard freezes while typing. while i am typing - about once every 2 sentences the screen stops updating while i type - it like it locks for around 1-2 seconds. If i keep typing the letters i typed do subsequently appear onscreen. Looks like i am going to have to uninstall the synapics generic driver...

Re: Jumping around on screen while typing

YES! thank you so much for the keyboard shortcut!!! It's exaclty what I was looking for.  I know it's my wrists hitting the little mouse buttons and placing the cursor at random in any old place...it's so annoying!  Until I found your Fn+F9 trick, I was burying the cursor where it wouldn't do much damage if I did click (on the side bar)
Thanks!!!
