Re: NB205-N311/W Touchpad Issues

Thanks for the suggestions,

There's no obstruction of any kind, The unit is leveled (it sat on my desk), and tried numerous troubleshooting.  I lowered the HDD protection to level 1, or turn the darn thing off.  I removed various software, norton, java, etc. and played around endlessly with the mouse settings.  I installed the default ps/2 mouse drivers then booted in safe mode with no resolve.

DPC latency was terrible, but I concluded it was not the cause of the stuttering or stalling.  My theory is since it still had touchpad problems in safe mode, I can only conclude it to be a BIOS problem and/or an actual touchpad hardware problem.

Subsequently, I returned the unit back to the retailer, for a refund, and am looking into purchasing some other netbook.

Re: NB205-N311/W Touchpad Issues

I am new to this forum...purchased an nb205-310/bn from staples 3 weeks ago and are having similar problems with touchpad as others here...stuttering/delayed  pointer, etc...I have been through tech support many times and even restored system to factory settings (a real waste of time considering Toshiba is aware of this problem it seems, guess the phillipines hasnt gotten the memo yet)The worst issue however for me is the scrolling feature that is non-existent. I will get little or no response despite any number of scroll settings tried. 1 out of 20 swipes will bring slight activity but nothing controllable.

Jim,  Does the manuf problem that was identified by you on the 18th include these scrolling problems?

Re: NB205-N311/W Touchpad Issues

Everything on this matter is intertwined to a degree.  Please try Jim's recommendation:

Check the advanced configuration options in Windows Control Panel's mouse and pointer settings, to rule out the possibility of a software installation or configuration issue before returning your NB205 to your dealer or having it repaired.  For any other trackpad problem, please go through a full troubleshooting process since no other symptoms are known to be related to this issue. Call (800) 457-7777 further assistance or take to Service Center or even consider a retailer exchange/refund action.

Re: NB205-N311/W Touchpad Issues

A point of clarification...

To have an NB205 repaired it is necessary to call 1-800-457-7777 and arrange for shipment to Toshiba's depot repair center that is dedicated to repair of these models.  No other service locations are authorized by Toshiba to perform warranty repairs on the mini notebook models.

Re: NB205-N311/W Touchpad Issues

Hi Jim,

I realize you probably can't speak to any specific repair details, but this warranty repair wouldn't happen to involve replacing the touchpad with a Synaptics model, would it?

:smileyhappy:

Thanks.

Re: NB205-N311/W Touchpad Issues

Nick,

At the risk of engaging in a game of 20 questions...   ;-)

No, the manufacturing process improvement I've referenced in this thread doesn't involve use of different parts.  I wouldn't call it a process improvement if it did.

Re: NB205-N311/W Touchpad Issues

There appear to be extremely few NB205s in need of touchpad repair, but in further testing a mouse property setting has been identified as a possible cause for what could be described as a stuttering or intermittent touchpad. This type of problem can sometimes be induced when a larger surface area of the finger is in contact with the touchpad, such as when the finger lies flat against the touchpad rather than the fingertip.

If you are experiencing this type of symptom, please try setting the touchpad's "Touch Sensitivity" to it's maximum setting ("High").  To access this setting, run Windows 'Control Panel' and go into 'Mouse Properties'.  From Mouse Properties, make the following selections:

  1. select the 'Advanced' tab
  2. click ‘Advanced feature settings…’
  3. In the ‘Pointer speed and tapping settings’ regions, click the ‘Settings…’ button
  4. set ‘Touch Sensitivity’ as far towards ‘High’ as possible

With this setting, there may be a greater likelihood of accidentally engaging the touchpad and moving the cursor while typing.  You may want to disable touchpad tapping while typing to avoid this, using the following steps, beginning from Detailed Touch Pad settings, as selected in steps 1-3 above:

  1. click ‘Tapping settings…’
  2. click checkbox for ‘Disable tapping during key Input’

Please reply to let me know if these settings resolve a stuttering touchpad problem for you or not.

Thanks,

Jim

Re: NB205-N311/W Touchpad Issues

Jim,

I appreciate you are probably a very busy man and I apologize in advance if my previous question was something you had previously answered.  However, as asked....I just would like to know if the Scrolling problem (or lack of scroll function) is something attributed to the manuf problem you previously identified.

Is this correct?

Thanks-

r3sons2..see Jims response on 8/29/09, it is definitive in content.  I would suggest that you contact more directly Toshiba itself (800) 457-7777 and learn what can be released on your query, or contact a Service Center and learn if any tech bulletins are on file.

Re: NB205-N311/W Touchpad Issues

r3sons2,

I don't know if this is related to the specific problem I posted the info about, but if you've done everything possible to adjust relevant advanced mouse properites related to the scrolling region then it is apparently some kind of hardware problem.  Sounds like it's time to call 1-800-457-7777 and send it in for repair, unfortunately.
