Re: NB205-N311/W Touchpad Issues

I haven't used my NB205 long enough yet, but am starting to note the occasional jumping, stuttering and other malladies associated with the touchbad (well covered in this thread). It is beyond frustrating and I am seriously thinking that I will have to jettison this model. This as a serious dent in the usability and marketability of an otherwise excellent netbook. If I can't reliably type and navigate the screen on a netbook, it is all but useless to me. The problem is clearly rampant, as there are multilple complaints from users on this forum as well as on Amazon customer reviews. I hope Toshiba can come up with a viable solution soon! I will be watching this thread closely.

Re: NB205-N311/W Touchpad Issues

I purchased a Toshiba NB205-N310/BN running XP Home about a month ago and have been experiencing the same stuttering issues with the touchpad as described in this thread.

I downloaded an older version of the Toshiba Alps driver (6.0.302.3), uninstalled the current Alps driver using Remove Programs from the Control Panel, rebooted, and then installed the older Alps 6.0.302.3 driver.

This appears to have alleviated some of the touchpad issues, especially with regards to slow response while vertical scrolling.  I now find the touchpad more usable, and it appears the older Alps 6.0.302.3 driver has the same feature set as the newer one.

Re: NB205-N311/W Touchpad Issues

Just tried the Synaptics driver again and the Microsoft default driver, just to make sure. In both instances the Touchpad Pointer "lag" is the same. Reinstalled the Alps driver to get the scrolling back. Very frustrating!

Re: NB205-N311/W Touchpad Issues

The NB205 has a 1-year warranty.

A brief snippet of the warranty states that "Toshiba warrants that the Product (1) is free from defects in materials and workmanship and (2) conforms to the factory specifications in effect at the time the Product was manufactured."

The full warranty doc is available in PDF format here.

I don't really get the import of the snippet about the warranty. How does that address this issue? Are you trying to say that everyone with this particular problem should avail of their warranty and send their netbook back to Toshiba? In which case, this would have to be a hardware issue? Please expound.

Re: NB205-N311/W Touchpad Issues

I think it was in response to my question earlier about how Toshiba would handle repairs if it turned out to be a hardware related issue and had nothing to do with the drivers as people originally thought. Considering Toshiba's engineers can't isolate the problem yet I'm probably just going to hold out for something with an ion gpu. Hopefully Toshiba fixes this issue by then since this netbook has everything I'm looking for.

Re: NB205-N311/W Touchpad Issues

I think Jim is just responding to the other guy saying that Toshiba warantee will cover the fix if it turns out to be a hardware issue.

I'm surprised that no more information has come out of Toshiba yet, seeing how i think this is a fairly widespread issue. Can a toshiba nb205 owner who doesn't have this touchpad problem post on here so we can at least know that this isn't an issue on all the nb205 netbooks. Because I'm starting to suspect this is a problem on all the toshiba netbooks except not everyone has noticed due to the slower nature of the intel atom.

Re: NB205-N311/W Touchpad Issues

Thanks for the clarification about the warranty bit. I didn't realize that it was a response to a specific query...

To echo the previous poster's sentiment, I too am surprised that Toshiba hasn't officially acknowledged that this is a widespread issue with the NB205s. Of course, I understand how that would be an impediment to future sales. However, it would be far worse for the company's reputation to have a bunch of dissatisfied, irate customers. In light of this, I await a speedy response!

Re: NB205-N311/W Touchpad Issues

I think that no acknowledgement is even worse for sales. I'm trying out this model because we'll be getting notebooks for most of our personnel. As long as there is no update, we don't know what the progress is and will be choosing a different brand.

Re: NB205-N311/W Touchpad Issues

gups,

I was just answering projectorinski's question about Toshiba's stance on repair/replacement if there is a hardware problem.  That's my expectation, though some have reported resolution through software changes.  My take on that is that those who have that experience were not experiencing the same problem.  Time will tell...
