We’ve owned at least 6 Toshiba laptops in the last 11 years - I think almost all of them some sort of Satellite model – and as such, we are very satisfied with the machines and the service (on the rare occasions we’ve needed it).
I have an odd question, though. Background: Once, we took one of our older machines in to be looked at because it shut down spontaneously and discovered that it had accumulated quite a bit of dust inside. The tech vacuumed it out, so to speak, and that was that.
When we purchased a machine for my personal use last year, I thought I’d try to head that dust problem off at the pass and try to keep the keyboard from being an entry point by covering it. My machine lives in the kitchen, a very small space with a lot of cooking going on, especially with flour. I have had no performance problems with my machine in the year that I’ve used it thus, but I wanted to know if there were any drawbacks to my version of covering the keyboard: I carefully put a strip of plastic wrap over just the top surface of the keyboard side of the computer (that is, not covering or coming near to any of the ports, vents, or other openings on the sides of the machine). I periodically replace this when holes develop from wear.
My question: Is any of the heat generated by the machine’s normal function INTENDED to be vented through the keyboard, by design? Or are the side and bottom fan and vents sufficient for this purpose? Is incidental venting of heat through the keyboard, although not per design, a sufficient reason to not cover the keyboard as I have?

If you took the laptop apart, you'd find that the keyboard does not provide any venting at all. Any heat dissipation would be simple convection, which would not me impeded by your homebrewed keyboard protector.
However, it is probable that flour is being pulled into the laptop by the ventilation/cooling fans and may be collecting on the heatsink fins, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to vacuum out the laptop on a regular basis.

Most venting of the heat of the laptop is done under/bottom the laptop.
Also, there are cheap clear keyboard covers now these days. http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/adet.to?poid=2
It is a good thing Toshiba makes all of the keyboards the same, because you don't have to worry about finding the right one.

simply raising it off of a solid surface or allowing the front or back (of the bottom) to be exposed to air will help you tremendously - ventilation isn't hard to assist
