2 GB RAM in Portege R100?

Hi everybody,

I'm thinking about upgrading my R100, especially about adding some more RAM. According to the specs, the R100 only supports up to 1 GB of RAM in its single memory bank.

Now I'm wondering whether a 2 GB memory chip like e.g. a Kingston 2-GB 800 MHz PC2-6400 DDR2 SODIMM would also work - has anyone here tried to install a 2 GB memory chip into the R100?

Cheers,

Jab

Re: 2 GB RAM in Portege R100?

Hi Jab,

The R100 comes with 256MB soldered onto the MoBo, and in addition to that you can add one PC2100 DDR module. As far as I know, the biggest PC2100 DDR SO-DIMM module is 1GB (at least I cannot find a bigger one with a quick search), so I'm affraid having 2GB is not possible (the DDR2 module you indicated is not compatible). Keep in mind that the total will include the soldered memory giving you a maximum of 1.25GB, which should be plenty for most tasks. More importantly would be to upgrade from a slow 1.8" HDD to an SSD (e.g. a fast CF card with a 1.8" 50-pin IDE adapter), which will speed up the computer considerably (and make it dead silent). Good luck!

Good thing you asked first, DDR2 won't work with a DDR notebook, and the Memory won't fit inside the slot allocated for it, they have a different size. And the maximum Ram the R100 cn accomodate is only 1.256 Gb, meaning you can only install the maximum 1 Gb Ram coz you already have an existing 256 Mb of Ram.
