Has anyone successfully installed 5Gbytes of RAM on an R600?
I installed a Toshiba 4G memory module PA3670U-1M4G (as well as trying a generic DDR2-800 4G module).
The setup screen shows 5120Mbytes of memory, but the BIOS only scans 3072Mb and the that's all that's reported
to the OS, as well. This is identical to the behavior with 3Gb installed.
The spec sheets for the R600 show it should handle 5G, the U9400 processor supports long mode ("64-bit"), but the BIOS will not report more than 3072.
Do I have a dud system or are Toshiba's specs faulty?
Thanks
vA

Neither one. Your interpretation of the specs is likely faulty. What is the full model number of your Portege?

It's an R600-ST4203.
This spec sheet indicates it's expandable to 5Gb:

The BIOS is the most recent available from Toshiba.

OK, now what operating system are you running? Vista 32 or Vista 64? If it's Vista 32, then there's your issue. A 32 bit OS cannot use more than 3 GB of memory.

This is the *BIOS* not scanning more than 3Gb of memory. It has nothing to do with the OS. If there's some toggle to change teh BIOS scan range, it isn't obvious.
FWIW: XP reports 2.86G of memory, not the 3.26G that I'd expect to see if it had a full 4Gb available.
Knoppix and RHEL5 (each 64-bit systems) also report 2.86Gb, just as the BIOS scans and reports to them.
The Fedora memory scan, you guessed it, scans 3Gbytes.
So, are the specs faulty or do I have dud system?
Thanks,
vA

Then I think it's time to take it up with Toshiba. It's unlikely any user in the forum will have an answer for you.
