I have an R500 this is giving drive errors in windows XP but it will not run chkdsk on startup. I tried booting to the Windows XP recovery console but when I boot using the CD I get a message there is no hard drive. I downloaded and tried the Hitachi DFT program but it also does not see a hard drive. As a test I tried the same two CDs on an R600 and M10 and neither see a hard drive after a DOS boot. On older M5 machines the two CDs work fine. Are there drivers I need to download and use? Thanks.

..neither see a hard drive after a DOS boot.
DOS cannot see the NTFS file system.
Maybe that's what you're talking about?

I'm not trying to see the NTFS file system (or any file system) -- when I boot to a CD drive none of the utility disks will see a hard drive.

So it's a hardware failure. If you know how, you can try changing the hard disk. Otherwise, it's service time.
