As per this webpage, I needed a special IBM floppy drive to install the RAID driver so I would install windows on my M400. Guess what? The driver is 2.6MB, but floppy drives can only hold 1.4MB!
So now I've wasted 2 weeks and purchased a floppy drive for nothing! I keep hearing all this rave about Windows 7- should I just call it quits on XP?

I don't know where you got that driver, but the XP Raid Driver on the Toshiba Support Site is only about 500KB when extracted which will easily fit on a floppy disk.
But you don't need a floppy drive to install XP on a SATA hard drive. You can do one of two things to accomplish this as well.
--------------------8<------------------- <snip> ------------------
You need to make sure that your XP install disk is at least SP1 level or higher for it to recognize a hard drive larger than 137gb in size. You can integrate SP1, 2, or 3 into your XP Instlal Disk by using nLite as per this guide.
Because Windows XP doesn't have native SATA support you'll need to do one of two things to install XP on your system. You'll need to follow this guide to integrate your SATA drivers into your XP Install Disk. DO yourself a huge favor and use the SATA drivers that they provide. You can integrate your Service Packs during this proceedure as well.
The other option is as follows.
--------------------8<------------------- <snip> ------------------
Enter the Bios and switch from AHCI mode to Compatability Mode then install XP as usual.
Switching back to AHCI (Runs a little faster than ATA mode)
- First step is to install the basic Motherboard Chipset Driver and ONLY this driver. Do
not install anything else prior to installing the Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver as
outlined below.
- Download the Intel Matrix Storage Manager here:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.asp
- Once you download the file, run it with the -a switch:
iata89_enu.exe -a
This will NOT install the Matrix Storage Manager. What this will do is run the installer, and
ONLY EXTRACT the files to C:\Program Files\Intel\Intel Matrix Storage Manager. Again, this
does NOT install anything.
- Your drivers are now located in C:\Program Files\Intel\Intel Matrix Storage Manager. They
will be found in either \Driver, or \Driver64, depending on whether you're running a 32-bit
or 64-bit OS.
- Go to Device Manager --> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Double-click on the Intel ICH8M 3-port
SATA Controller - 2828... remember, *ONLY* click on the device that ends with 2828.
- Go to Driver tab, and choose to Update Driver.
- Tell the Wizard prompts:
- No, not this time
- Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
- Don't Search. I will choose the driver to install.
- Click the "Have Disk" button. Point it to C:\Program Files\Intel\Intel Matrix Storage
Manager\Driver (or Driver64).
- Choose the driver you want to install....
- After you install the driver and click OK out of every menu, reboot the laptop.
-) During reboot, go into BIOS and turn on AHCI mode
--------------------8<------------------- <snip> ------------------
Install your drivers in this order.
Restart after each driver and take the time to test between drivers.
Some will apply and some won't.
Chipset software
Display driver
Sound driver
Modem Driver
If your machine has the internal WiFi card, then install the WLAN and/or WiFi driver
ACPI Common Modules (required for Power management tools to function)
Toshiba Console
Display Hotkey utility
Touchpad Driver
Touchpad enable/disable utility
Toshiba Network Device Switch utility
Toshiba Power Saver Utility
Toshiba Controls
Toshiba Utilities
--------------------8<------------------- <snip> ------------------

Thank you, sir.
This is the second time you told me that, but I don't have AHCI mode or Compatability mode in my BIOS.
Also, I put that driver you linked to me on the floppy drive but it said "The file txtsetup.oem could not be found"

Check to see if there is one that says somthing on the line of SATA to IDE mode. If not you need to use the slipstream method outlined in the first portion of my post. You could also try the Intel driver they refer to in that guide as it is a text mode driver.
And next time continue an existing thread of yours instead of starting a new one that covers the same material. It makes things easier as those of us assisting you will know where things are. Some of us will read a couple of hundred messages a day and it's extremely difficult to remember what we have told someone in another thread.

Windows 7 is out and you can download it from Microsoft directly to your computer. Use the provided download manager too. If you are a student, with a. Edu email address you can get a major discount from Microsoft on their price student website. Also, it works well out of the box and Windows 7 Update will tell you the drivers you need automatically!

I have M400-EZ5031.
On my M400, there's no choice for AHCI, IDE, compatible mode, or Enhanced mode.
There are only JBOD or Raid 0 for the HDD setting.
JBOD is supposed to be "Just Bunch of Disks" mode, and Raid0 is when you have 2nd disk drive into your ODD bay and make it Raid configured system.
Anyhow, there's no way you can configure M400(-EZ5031) to make your system recognize your HDD/SDD as native IDE mode.
You have to have a driver either on the Floppy drive or in the windows (XP/Vista/7) install CD/DVD.
As far as I know, none of the windows install disk comes with the tochiba raid driver for M400, so you will have to somehow provide it during the installation process.
From my M400-EZ5031, below is the driver you need to install after you press F6 during the blue XP initial installation screen. It's only like 300 KB which is far less than 1.44 MB for the floppy disk.

I installed windows 7 on my system, and everything works fine.
Well, I can't really say everything but for the most of people, you should not have any serious problem.
There's one problem for windows 7 users wih SSD.
Windows 7 Does not recognize which SSD is installed.
So, you can't use any of the SSD manufacturer's utility.
But, if you only have HDD, there's no problem.
