TDP-ET20U crashed suddenly

Hi  I own the TDP ET20 since Sep 2007 and it has been flawless. I have logged about 550 hours on the lamp. 2 days ago while I was watching a movie the image & sound suddenly disappeared and the projector switched off. Now whenever I switch it on there is a light being projected but it is dim and no image. There is the usual little light leakage from the grill too. No image and no sound. After about 20 seconds it switches off. Cannot acess the menu.

I opened the lamp cover and there was a little coarse white powder underneath and the little porceline piece on the back of the lamp with OSRAM written on it, covering the central terminal was broken in two pieces. Otherwise the lamp looks undamaged.

My questions: There is still some light when the projector starts. So could it still be a fused lamp?

If not - what? Any ideas?

Would really appreciate any help. Thanks

Re: TDP-ET20U crashed suddenly

 Update:

On New Year's eve I got thinking and took out the projector and subjected it to repeated cycles of switch on-no image, no menu-auto off-fan runs for a few seconds- finally standby. After about ten such attempt, it suddenly gave me a normal image. Is working fine since then.

WHAT HAPPENED? Afraid it might happen again.

Any clues?

Nonexistent support in this forum

Expensive projector, not a common gadjet, specialized maintianence info.

Is this forum DEAD?

Re: TDP-ET20U crashed suddenly

I haven't seen it but it sounds like the insulator, ceramic piece, has broken.  I am guessing that piece insulated and supported the lamp and wires.  So now it will turn on, but if the lamp or wires move then it won't turn on again.

I would look into getting a new lamp/bulb.  Make sure that ceramic piece is part of the new lamp.

Hi armu,

The forums are quite lively though most of the action and expertise here is centered around laptop computing.

I recommend calling the Toshiba Customer Support Center at 800-457-7777, or using the ASP Locator to find your nearest projector repair facility.

6thCylon and Jim

Thanks

Dont' mind the rant. You know how it feels when a dearly beloved [gadjet] dies.

Well, the projector is working again but now the remote has suddenly failed.

It is the remote, not the projector that's faulty. And do you know how I know? I have a test of my own which I'm sure is not common knowledge. Here it is for all to share. [pompous, pompous]

The remote bulb gives off EM radiation (light) which cannot be percieved by our eyes. However if you look at it through a digital camera the light is sensed and can be seen in the camera screen like an ordinary flashlight bulb. Just point your phone camera (in video mode) at the remote bulb and press any key. If it works it will light up.

May the electrons keep flowing

Re: TDP-ET20U crashed suddenly

Hi

Anybody know where I can source a remote for my Toshiba TDP ET20 projector.

Just want to say that though I have had problems with the projector, yet this model is one of the best home entertainment devices ever produced. (my opinion)

Reasons: Short throw lens: Can set it up anywhere conviniently. The importance of this feature has to be experienced.

In built audio: Though not top notch but is good enough for movies in which the sound track is not vital.

The only real negatve aspect is that there is no analog audio output. Cannot connect it directly to your audio system of headphones. Need a converter or a home theatre system that accepts digital audio input.

I am curious as to why Toshiba has discontinued this model.

Any help of the remote whoul be appreciated.

 Thanks
