Virtual PC

Not sure if this belongs in the Windows 7 forums or here.  But I have a Qosmio X305-Q705 that I installed Windows 7.  Everything has been working fine so far, except I attempted to install Windows Virtual PC to be able to use Windows XP Compatibility mode, but apparently this system doesn't have Hardware-Assisted Virtualization on the CPU?

What's better yet now that I have upgraded my system to Windows 7 I cannot use Virtual PC 2007 because of compatibility issues.  Anyone have any issues like this or have a workaround?

Thanks

Re: Virtual PC

1. Feel lucky that you can get Windows 7 on your Toshiba. There are a bunch of newish models that don't support it at all.

2. As a last resort you can run VirtualBox by Sun (free) and install XP in there. I know it's not as elegant as the other solutions, but it should work well assuming you can get your copy of XP on it. I've run Windows 7, Ubuntu, and Solaris on my Toshiba using VirtualBox. Available here http://www.virtualbox.org/ . Hope this helps.

Re: Virtual PC

I've been running and beta testing windows 7 for nearly a year on a few different toshiba's with no trouble.

Go to the downloads section for your model and look for a bios update.

They also have a lot of windows 7 drivers listed there.

As to the virtual machine, VMWare workstation is what I use and it works well.

Re: Virtual PC

I have a Qosmio G25. Windows 7 won't install on this machine. Toshiba does not support Win7 on it either. I can run Win7 virtually, but not as the base OS.

The G25 has the Mobile Intel 915PM Express Chipset and Intel doesn't support it under Windows7.  It is possible to install Se7en on the 915 chipset, but you have to use the Vista display driver in XP mode which leaves you without Aero.  While it will run, it isn't worth the hassle to do it though.  XP runs much better on the 915 chipset.

If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

Re: Virtual PC

Wasn't able to find acceptable HD drivers Win7 asks for during initial install to even get it to install. Tried Vista drivers, no joy.

I had the X305-Q705 and bought it specifically because I thought it supported Intel Virtualization Technology.  Turned out to be a typo on Intel's site - the P7350 CPU does NOT support VT.  I opted to sell it and replace with a quad-core desktop and a small laptop instead, but my other option was to replace the CPU.

There are several CPU's that would be a perfect replacement, starting with the P8400.  It's not an easy job to dismantle the laptop, not to mention warranty issues, but that's the only way to make it VT capable.  I spent months looking into it - and my old posts describe various upgrades for the X305's.

As for Windows 7, I installed it on the X305. I had the last beta and the RC on it.  It ran beautifully and no problems at all.  The VirtualPC wasn't available then, at least not the new version, but I did run the Virtual 2007 on it without VT.  My understanding is that XP compatbility requires VT, but I believe you could install and run the old VirtualPC with your own copy of XP - it just won't be the "Windows 7" way.

RE: VirtualBox - I want to love it, but I've corrupted more than a few VM's and I'm leery of it.

RE: VMWare - Yeah baby!  Version 7 just came out, supports Aero now.  I love it and depend on it.

Cheers.
