That model number isn't listed that I can find. Can you verify the model number and also provide the part number which will look like this: PSAA2U-005019 Also, if this isn't a USA model please let me know what country you are from.
Off the top of my head I would say it uses a 2.5" EIDE hard drive but doesn't have the necessary 48bit addressing for hard drives larger than 137gb in size so you will effectively be limited to a 120gb or smaller drive. But I can't be 100% certain until I either find that model number listed someplace.

thanks for you interest. The model number A45-S269 is correct. I haven't been able to remove the miniature Philips head screws from the cover to the compartment that I thin houses the hard drive, so I can't give you the part number. Of course there is little point in going ahead before I manage the screws to the compartment cover, and if you have any suggestions about that I'd be doubly grateful. I've been using jeweler's screwdrivers.

Normally it requires either a Phillips size #0 or #1. The most common size for household and auto repairs is a #2 Phillips which would be too large.
The part number would be for the laptop itself and would be found on the tag on the bottom of the laptop, not the hard drive although that would also tell me for sure if it's EIDE or not.

I see two embodied (not pasted) tags with numbers on the bottom of the laptop case: PA3362U-1MPC and the other, marked Model Number, PSM42U-016006. Hope that helps.
Thanks again.

PSM42U-016006 comes up as an M45-S269, not an A45-S269. That's why I couldn't find it listed.
Based on the M45-S269 it uses a 9.5mm thick 2.5" SATA hard drive of any size. The only size limitations would be for WIndows. If you are using XP then you need to have XP SP1 to recognize a drive larger than 137gb in size. I'm not sure what the Recovery Disk is that came with the system. If it isn't SP1 or higher you might have a problem installing to a drive larger than 137 gigs in size if you go that route. If you are going to clone the old drive to the new one just make sure that you have SP1 or higher installed.
Vista and Windows 7 don't have this problem.
