Error 10-fc10-0017 when using recovery disc

I believe I had a virus and friend formated the hard drive. When I use the recovery disc to restore to out of the box condition. I get into the 2nd cd-rom and about 2/3 through this error pops up and it says to click ok to turn off computer. Anybody have any ideas? Someone said it had something to do with the bootmgr or log or something. I'm marginally computer literate.

I've seen this error code several times and it is a defective hard drive causing this. Replace the hard drive and then run the recovery disc and you will be good to go.

I ran the SCANDSK utility in DOS and this showed no errors. Could the hard drive still be defective?

Yea, and I really don't have a great explanation as to why other then I've seen it on multiple occasions and replacing the drive fixed it.

you do know that you will not reboot thru the cd unless you hold down the c key when booting.  this is  an easy way to tell the computer to boot off the cd.  try this !
