WRONG MACHINE error on a Toshiba A105-S4074

Hi there, everyone,

I have a Toshiba laptop, model type A105-S4074. It was working fine up until a couple days ago. I booted it up in the morning and after a long wait (the Toshiba screen and windows loading screen showed) I got nothing but a black screen with the backlight on. I tried starting it in Safe Mode only to be stuck at the infamous MUP.sys hang; at this point I decided to bring out the recovery disk.

Lo and behold, I put them in and only received a WRONG MACHINE error. It looks like:  http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3202/2316348653_9a06487ff2.jpg?v=0 , but it's upon boot and there is no other options. Anyone know how to fix this? I am running XP on a Vista capable machine, and from research here it seems there is something wrong with the DMI code. A search for software updates has proven fruitless, and I am turning to you here.

If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it. I am wanting if possible to get this done without having to take it to an ASP, and for the lowest cost possible.

Thanks!

Zabuza,

Unfortunately, service by an ASP is the only option for getting this resolved.

If I may ask a question, has your computer ever been repaired and had its system board replaced?

Thanks,

Jim

Re: WRONG MACHINE error on a Toshiba A105-S4074

The computer has seen personal use for a while now, about 2 years, and it has never been replaced/been tampered with.

It is frustrating, to say the least, that a company would make a machine without support such as this when there is a DMI repair for quite a few other models. A scheme to make more money? Perhaps. I understand this is how the business works, but I have been using Toshibas for years and the lack of assistance (even an email to write to officially) is frustrating.

I understand the frustration.  This is a business process and data management issue to be worked out and resolved, not a Toshiba profit opportunity.  Toshiba does not make a penny off of out of warranty service events.  That said, our Authorized Service Providers must charge for their time since they have overhead costs.

For official communication you can call 800-457-7777 for tech support and customer service, or I can provide a mailing address for postal mail.
