The OEM HDD (5K250-250) that arrived in my P205 is missing the black plastic around the connector.
Is the Hitachi Travelstar the ONLY HDD that will work with my laptop? Or am I missing something REALLY obvious.

The SATA format is standardized. I'm not sure what you mean by missing the black plastic around the connector. Most hard drives have NOTHING around the connectors. A few that are designed to use special locking cables will have some plastic for the locks to attach to. A picture here would be VERY helpful.

Below you will notice the Hitachi drive, which is the OEM HDD. To the right what I typically see when I look at SATA connections.
Okay, I am not allowed to upload a JPG.
If you google "5K250", you will find the Hitachi HDD. It has no black plastic around the connectors.
All other SATA drives, that I have seen, have the black plastic "shroud." I would love to upload the picture, if someone will tell me how.
When I tried to upload, the message:
The file does not have a valid extension for an attachment. txt are the valid extensions.
was returned.

To post a picture you have to upload it to a picture hosting site such as ImageShack, PhotoBucket, or MediaFire then link to it here.
Are you sure that it isn't just an adaptor that can be pulled off of the old drive and placed on the new one? Dell's are notorious for doing this on their drives.
If you don't bother to post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

Yes, I am familiar with Dell computers.
No, if you google Travelstar, you will see that the connector is not shrouded.
