Replace hard drive

Hi,

I have a toshiba M35X-S349 model.

3 -4 months ago suddenly, its hard drive crashed.

I thought it might be a faulty laptop again (it has been to the repair center thrice, motherboard, keyboard, DVD writer, Power chord, battery have been replaced already), so I bought an enclosure...I tried the hard drive to work from a different computer through the enclosure, but it didn't work. I am planning to atleast buy a new HD and keep this computer alive as the secondary one.

What kind of hard drives I can have ?

Is this OK? Western Digital 120GB SATA Notebook Hard Drive https://www.jr.com/western-digital/pe/WD_WD1200BEVSRT/#productTabDetails

The manual says

80GB (4200 RPM), 60GB (4200 RPM), Enhanced IDE (ATA-5)

hard disk drive; 9.5mm height; user removable

I am confused... plz help..Before buying the hard disk, should I try anything else ?

Thanks

Re: Replace hard drive

If your specs say EIDE ATA-5 (or -6 or -100) then a SATA drive will not work.  You have a Parallel ATA (PATA) drive.  You will need one that is compatible with ATA-100, ATA-6 or ATA-5.  They are all backward compatible.  The drive must be able to be jumpered as a Master drive.  A cable select drive will not work.  Both Western Digital and Seagate make drives that meet the spec.

Re: Replace hard drive

Hi,

If I search for PATA, I generally come up with SATA drives.

DO you have any specific drives you can suggest me ?

Thanks

Re: Replace hard drive

The Western Digital Scorpio Blue Line has compatible models, the WD3200BEVE for instance is an EIDE drive with jumpers and is 320GB.
