SD Card problem - unable to format

I have a problem (along with many other Toshiba laptop owners) with my computer, a Satellite 2400 S251 (Windows XP Pro SP/2/3) in that the SD card reader is being inoperative.  The computer sees the drive (E) OK in (My computer).  It shows the drive as E when there is a SD card Inserted in this slot but when I click on it (Drive E) the message pops up that the card needs to be formatted......But when I try to format The card it begins the process and then another window pops up that says Windows was unable to format the card.  I've tried many different SD cards From 512 MB up to 2 gigs and I get the same results.  The properties of the drive show 0 bytes available and 0 bytes used (all blue).  I have updated the bios and the Windows OS to the most recent software and updated the driver, restarted, updated again, and still no luck with finding a solution to this problem.  Now the SD card reader slot is rather useless!  Has anyone found a solution to this most common problem? As insurance, I have ordered a 4 port USB2 PCMCIA card along with a 4GB flash card since there doesn’t seem to be a workable solution to this problem from the feedback (comments) I have read on the Toshiba web site.  Thanks.
