Satellite M45-S169 Additional Memory

[ Edited ]

I purchased the Kingston 1GB additional memory recommended for the M45-S169 (it is KTT3311 A/1G).  Install was easy.  Laptop has internal 512 RAM and works fine, although slow. After installing the additional RAM module, the computer gives a fatal error and reboots. Reboot happens at different times - during Windows XP loading, or after login, but never more than a couple of seconds after starting.  Blue screen goes away too quickly to read, but I did notice the words PAGE_FAULT.  I looked in SETUP and it reports 1.5 GB.

First question: what is the difference between "A" and without the "A"in the part number and should I care.  I got the one with the "A".

Second question: Is it OK to have 512 size internal RAM and 1GB additional or could that cause my problem?

My only other option is that I received a defective 1GB RAM card and should return it for another one.

Thanks in advance for any ideas you might have that I could try before assuming I need to return this memory module.

Re: Satellite M45-S169 Additional Memory

You would need to check with Kingston on the difference between the A and non A is.

It should function fine with a 512meg and a 1gig.  That isn't an uncommon combination.

Have you downloaded and run Memtest to see what that says about your memory?  That would be my next step.  Once you have that information contact Kingston to see what they say.

Re: Satellite M45-S169 Additional Memory

THANKS for the reply.

I have downloaded the Memtest ISO, burned a CD and tested it on the laptop with just the internal (512 MB) RAM. That worked just fine.  Then I installed the additional RAM and ran Memtest of fthe bootable CD.  It reports a number of errors.  So I guess the RAM I purchased is defective.  I didn't know there was a bootable memory test tool available - thanks for the link.

Memtest reported Memory as 1470 M with 530 MB/s - so it appears the additional RAM chip (1 Gig) is being accessed and basically has no problem with compatability - it just has defects.

I am awaiting a reply to my RMA request from the vendor where I purchased the RAM.

Re: Satellite M45-S169 Additional Memory

I returned the first memory card and received a new memory card. After installation (very easy), I ran the memory test for two hours without any failures. The system performance is like new - speed is much improved.

The second RAM card was purchased direct from Kinston.
