So the reason I posted all these questions was what I really wanted to do was upgrade a defective DVD ROM with A DVD Burner.. I did this in a Compact C300 Laptop, And I had to update my Bios to get the laptop to recognize it. It worked. I was hoping to do the same with these 3 4600's I have. When I finally found the Drivers page I noticed the Bios version was the same as the one already installed. Which tells me you can't add any DVD ROM's other then what's already in the Bios configuration. And I guess for 2001 laptops there weren't that many choices.

The optical drice in a 4600 is a m/s also known as an inverted cable select drive. It is not compatible with the cable select drives found in compaqs or most other brands of that era. you can get one on ebay cheap or take one out of a tecra 9000, 9100, or portege 4010, etc.
