External Toshiba Portable drive not detecting easily on S300-EZ2501

What I have: Toshiba 2.0 USB external portable hard drive (500 GB) (Black  :-P for whom it concerns) -

Using with: Toshiba Satellite Pro S300-EZ2501 running on Windows XP SP3

Issue: The portable drive is not detected when connected to the laptop's USB (90% failure).

Trials: Booted under Safe mode, the portable drive gets detected. 90% sucess. Restarted the system to the normal mode, 60% sucess rate of the portable drive to get re-detected in the normal mode. Else repeat the process about the 3rd time for the portable drive to get detected.

There is absolutely no occurance of this issue when connecting to other laptops or desktops in the office/friend's machines!

Am I using the USB ports?

Yes, Using a USB bluetooth toggle MS mouse - no complaints. Using USB 8GB thumb drive from Transcend with no issues. Using Sony camera for transfering data from memory card - again no issues.

Thanks Jerry for a reply.

Due to a sheer stroke of luck, i came to find out the bug (and giving credit to how the word computer "bug"

came about ---> http://www.jamesshuggins.com/h/tek1/first_computer_bug.htm )

The bug: Using a pirated copy of 120% Alcohol (for trial purposes only!) - a software creating and mounting virtual copies of the DVD/CD images. While the DVD/CD images are mounted, the Toshiba drive could not be detected. After un-mounting the images, the Toshiba drive was easily detected.

Solution: Use legal software copies only. :smileytongue:

I never would have guessed. How did you figure that one out?

Grace Hopper was a big name in computing in the late '50 when this old geezer was a programmer. She was eventually promoted to Rear Admiral.

Jerry,

given the time, I love playing with different software. Was introduced to virtual CD drive creatation which souded good, in order to save your DVDs/CD from wear and tear due to regualr use.

In the process of pluging and unplugging the Toshiba drive, i had unmounted a CD image (for the purpose to load an other album), the drive got detected! Vola!

Someone with information how windows-to-software hardware drivers work, might explain whats going on.

LOL, Jerry!

yeah right....

i was thinking more on the lines, "....even after all these years software developlment still sucks!"

How many [everyday] softwares are we aware of that will utilize the dual processors available in today's market? Close to none. Then whats the use the dual core processor marketed without users making any good use of it.

Credit goes to game development groups wherein they think of such applications - use dual core processing of the CPU as well as the GPU to create those blitz-action oriented interactive games. For office applications, internet based apps - prefer using the single core processor with larger cache memory and higher clock speeds.

How long do you suppose it will be before they take advantage of 64-bit computing?

But programming has improved a good deal since we wrote spaghetti code back in my day (the 1950s).

Pump cash to the two world's largest population - China and India  - more heads are better than a few :-P

Computer related techinal problems can be solved with right algorithms, right? Giving more rewards to people who come from field of applied mathematics and computing, might increase to a higher rate on getting answers for such needs. Sounds like you have been waiting a long while since the 50s! lol
