Satellite Pro 4600 memory upgrade

Greetings!  Has anyone upgraded the memory in a Satellite Pro 4600 beyond the manufacturer's stated limit of 512MB?  The User's Guide says it will support up to 512MB by installing two 256MB PC100 SDRAM modules but I would expect that one should be able to install more memory than that.  I currently have 384MB RAM running Windows XP and it is SLOW.  I doubt that 512MB is going to be much of an improvement and would like to install 1GB instead (since memory is so cheap).  The Part Number on the bottom of the laptop is PS460U-06USVBE if that helps.  Thanks in advance...

It's doubtful that it would work.  That system was designed for Windows 98 and 2000 and will run MUCH better with 2000 than it will with XP.  You could always try it, but don't bet the farm on being able to get it to run stable if it iven posts.

Don't know about the memory, but I'll second what cee_64 said about that machine running much better with w2k than with XP.

I had one of those, and when XP came out, I installed it.  Poor machine ran so slow it was next to unusable. w2k or even (gasp) 98SE is a much better choice for machines of that vintage.

Or Linux.  I would run Linux before I ran 98se dur to security issues.  There are a lot of Linux distros that would run just fine on that system and still be up to date.  Linux isn't that difficult to use these days.  Much easier than Vista or Win7.
