As per the product spec from Toshiba for S300-S2503, maximum RAM supported is 4GB on the GM45 Express chipset.

Following is an excerpt from the Toshiba product spec.

1. Configured with 3072MB (2048MB + 1024MB) PC2-6400 DDR2 SDRAM.

2. 2 memory slots
3. 3072MB (Min)/4096MB (Max), with 1024MB or 2048MB PC2-6400 DDR2 memory modules

But, Intel's product spec says the max RAM supported is 8GB for a GM45 chipset.

Following is the excerpt from Intel GM45's product spec.

Is this a restriction put by Toshiba ? or is this a different chipset ? or is this a different RAM altogether ?

Can some one clarify this?

Try it and see.  Some users have successfully installed 8GB in a machine with the GM45 chipset.  I haven't seen anyone post who has tried and failed so the jury is still out.
