Hello everyone, I truly hope someone can help me. I read all the posts and went through all the solutions that were suggested but I still have no audio on my Toshiba A135-S4656. It's a stock computer right out of the box. Windows Vista Home, 512MB.
The sound just stopped one day and the red X is on the speaker icon in the toolbar.
I downloaded RealTec drivers, but that didn't fix it.
I reset the computer with the recovering disks, that didn't do it either.
Under device manager it should "unknown device on high def audio bus" , Properties show the "device is not configured Code 1".
I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it, no help. Windows asks to search for driver, I let it but it cannot find one.
Could I have a hardware failure? Is the modem card related to the lack of audio?
I could really use some expert advice.
Please respond with any suggestions.
Thanks
Sam

I reset the computer with the recovering disks,..
That pretty much tells the story, Sam. It's almost certain your hardware is malfunctioning.

Jerry, I have the same problem.
The thing is, before I reinstall the driver using the accompanying recovery disc, the system was able to detect the presence of an audio hardware, so I assume that hardware is properly connected.

Which computer do you have?
before I reinstall the driver using the accompanying recovery disc..
Do you mean that you reinstalled a driver or restored the entire drive? Or maybe you intend to? Hard to fathom from your language.

Geezz Jerry what is so hard to understand ???? Are all your "super contributor" answers so pompous and arrogant?
The problem he is having is one day his audio worked the next it did not. He re-installed the drivers and OS and still has the problem.
The same problem I am having with a friends laptop. The audio will not work. New drivers, old drivers, new install of OS from restore disk or from an Original Vista (Yes I legally own it and no it is not on another system).
The audio does not show up unless you add it thru the Legacy Device Menu. Then it says "Device cannot start Code 10" While researching this it seems that the device is writing something in the registry but I have found no fixes for it. Seems there are a lot people having this problem.
So be a "super contributer" and help us find an answer instead of quoting people and saying "This explains it all"

Laptop model is Toshiba M105-S3041.
Realtek High Definition audio driver was uninstalled using 'Add or Remove Programs'. Same driver was reinstalled using Toshiba Recovery disc that came in the box with the laptop. Audio won't work.
Device Status reads: "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)"
So you reinstalled this driver?

Try the recommendations under Code 41 in this Microsoft document.

He re-installed the drivers and OS and still has the problem.
That's what I was struggling to understand, Takajim.
If the OS were indeed restored as you infer, then that's the gold-standard test for a hardware failure.
Didn't mean to be pompous and arrogant. Trying to be helpful.

First my apologies for the remark, it was uncalled for.
Now the code 10 problem. It is my understanding that some code 10's (cd/dvd) can be fixed with a registry tweak. So hardware failure is not always the culpritbut my case it might be. As I have found nothing yet on the sound card. Believe it or not I just suffered a code 10 on the intergrated NIC on my desk top that I built a year ago.
So I guess the answer is to just scour the internet to find some thing. Microsoft KB is absolute useless in this matter also. I am tossed between an OS snafu and hardware crash. I am still looking though. ![]()

I don't know what your situation is. You have a sound problem? Which computer? Which Windows?
Is this the Microsoft KB you talk about?
Description of Code 10-related errors that Device Manager generates in Windows-based computers
Regarding the registry, I have had some luck removing left-over debris after uninstalling in Device Manager. I can provide details.
