Screen Re-Cracking

After I cracked my screen the first time I had it repaired, and now the screen has cracked again in almost the exact same pattern as before with out me abusing it at all. Is there some reason for that or should I just get a new computer?

a screen will not crack without some sort of force.

Re: Screen Re-Cracking

That's BS about "some sort of force".  I bought my laptop in the middle of July.  Didn't use it most of August because I was on vacation.  It sits on a table when not in use, no cats or any other type of "force" ever sees it, it's never been dropped or anything of the sort.  There's absolutely zero damage not even the slightest hint of a scratch anywhere on the screen or the surrounding housing.  Yet, there's a large crack running down the screen from the top.  You can clearly see that this crack started somewhere under the "trim" like a defective windshield will do from under the body trim.

I took it to Best Buy where I bought it and the tech there in the "Geek Squad" said it's a "VERY COMMON" problem with Toshibas and is caused by,,,,,, wait for it,,,,,, "Opening it".  That's right the very "force" needed to actually open the screen in order to use the thing as designed causes it to crack.

When I called the Customer Service rep at Toshiba they actually said the guy at Best Buy was a complete idiot and then told me I caused the damage and it would not be covered under any type of warranty.  Unless of course I had paid extra for the accidental damage warranty.  What a total crock.

I bought a "budget" computer because that's all I needed at home basically for personal emails, believing that even in a lower price range Toshiba products were high quality.

I worked in Field Service doing repairs on customer equipment for years, I've seen every "I was just minding my own business when this happened" kind of BS damage to multiple types of equiptment.  This laptop screen is simply defective, just like the hundreds of others I've seen people talking about online.

It's really a shame that a company that I've always looked to to provide high quality products would treat their customers this way.  I guess my only saving grace at this point is that now I work and am very active in a field where I speak to literally tens of thousands of people yearly about technology and quality manufacturing processes.  I now have a perfect example to use in lectures.

I guess this once outstanding company has fallen to the same ills that have eaten up so many American companies and they've started worrying too much about pennies on the bottom line instead of the dollars tied to good customer service.

A screen does not find a way to crack on it's own without the force. Opening a laptop should be taken with ease and opened without much force. I also own a Toshiba and haven't had a screen problem (Besides stuck pixels). If bestbuy will fix it let them fix it.

Re: Screen Re-Cracking

I have had a Toshiba laptop for 60 days.  Used almost exclusively at home for my business.  One day I used it for several hours, left it on my desk, walked away for a few hours, came back and there were horizontal and vertical lines all over it and a black "splotch" near the corner.  I tried restarting it...same thing.  It was only 60 days old.  I sent it away to the Toshiba Repair Depot and they e-mailed me that there was a crack in it.  There was not a crack when I sent it to them.  It was going to be $425 to repair it.  I only paid $399 for the computer.  I am VERY frustrated.  No one can help me over the phone other than to say it has a crack and cannot be fixed unless I pay the $425.  Hard for me to believe that I got a crack in it sitting on my desk unused.  They have given me a physical address I can sent a letter to with my complaint...they don't even have an e-mail I can usent to.  Any suggestions?

[ Edited ]

The outside case of the display area of a lot of newer laptops (not just Toshiba, but a lot of the more fancy designed laptops) are extremely weak when it comes to providing protection.  They have entirely too much flex in them and don't offer the protection they should.  I've seen more than one display cracked or damaged by the owner just opening up the top of one of these laptops by squeezing it too hard.  It tales almost no amount of pressure on the back of the lid to distort the colors on the display screen on most of these laptops compared to what it took only a few years ago (you had to really squeeze tightly to distort the display on my old Dell Inspiron 5160).  And it isn't just Toshiba either.  The lateral stability is also not what it once was allowing the display to flex if one doesn't handle the lid in the exact center when opening, closing, or adjusting the screen angle.  My ex-wife's HP purchased in May of this year has the same weak cover.

It appears that in the quest for a greater share of the laptop market designers have sacrificed protection and safety in favor of a more pleasing design aesthetic.

Re: Screen Re-Cracking

All, I had the same issue with Laptop Screen. I had been using laptops for quite some time and never had this kind of issue. I just kept my laptop with little force than I usually do and it broke. I had been using IBM<HP & Dell laptops for a long long time and never had this sort of issue.

Re: Screen Re-Cracking

Take a look at a Lenovo (formerly IBM) laptop and you'll see the difference.  They haven't sacrificed functionality and protection for looks like most of the other manufacturers.
