I have a new (10/25/09) laptop that came with windows 7 preloaded, not an upgrade from vista. It is the 64 bit version and locks up on me a couple of times an hour. The only software I have loaded is the drivers for an HP photosmart C4435 and did that by connecting the printer to the usb port. I returned one to bestbuy within 24 hours but the replacement does the same thing. It occurs most often while on the internet. Bestbuy installed webroot as the virus protection and I do not visit questionable sites.
I am tired of rebooting a new computer and need to figure out if the issue can be resolved before my 30 day return time frame elapses. Any help or knowledge of the issue would be helpful. Bestbuy claims they are unaware of any issues.

Every HP printer I've installed required that an install program be run prior to plugging in the printer. Just plugging in the printer was a sure guarantee of failure. What does the printer documentation say about installation?

The printer works fine. The issue of the laptop locking up or freezing was happening prior to the printer being installed. In fact, the first laptop received was returned before ever loading the printer driver. I was just pointing out that I had only loaded that one piece of software. Sorry for the confusion.

See if running the System File Checker helps.

I bought two of the exact same computer, the A505-6980 and have not had any problems at all with either of them.
The very first thing I did though was to uninstall all the bloatware freebie and trial software that it came loaded with. Since then I've loaded Ultra VNC, and Office on the two computers and they both work fine.
When the computer locks up, can you do a control-alt-delete and bring up the task manager? You might want to look at that before it locks up too, to see what apps are running.

I have also had the same problem. I purchased a new Dell computer 4 weeks ago and had to take it back because it kept locking up and the only way to get out was ctrl, alt, delete. It was loaded with Vista. I took the computer back and purchased this Toshiba A505-S5990 loaded with Windows 7 and it is doing the same thing. Could someone tell me what is going on. I was told to release pop-up blocer but this did not help. My son says it is a programing error, but how do I find out how to get that corrected. It is very frustrationg to have to back out of everything and start over. Makes you want to pitch the computer in the trash. Since I use mine for my real estate business, I can't really do that,
Does anyone have a solution for this problem?

A505-S5990
Maybe this one?
Are you willing to spend some time poking around?
Note the computer-clock time of the lockup as nearly as you can.
Open Problem Reports and Solutions (wercon.exe), click on View problem history, and see if you can identify the incident by its time and description.

My wife also just bought an A505-S6992 laptop from Fry's and it is locking up intermittently and
even on shut down. It has had a 2000 version of Microsoft Office loaded and two printers plugged
into the usb ports(it identified both printers on its own). From your experience, I am not very pleased
with what we have to look forward to. Fry's is not exactly return friendly. Also you better check Best Buys
return deadlines because I think computers have to be returned in about 14 days.
