A small set of laptop models require a BIOS update to be compatible with 64-bit versions of Windows 7. The model list and download links are available below.
Windows blue screen error conditions (BSOD) may occur during or after the installation process if the BIOS is not updated to the minimum versions.
Please note that not all models in the below listed model families will require the BIOS upgrade, but only those with Part Numbers matching the detail below. The Part Number can be found on a sticker on the bottom of Toshiba laptops.
Models, Part Numbers, BIOS versions, and download links follow:
Satellite A305D (part numbers beginning with PSAH8U & PSAHCU only)
- BIOS ver. 2.00 (current) or later :: [DOWNLOAD]
Satellite L300D & L305D (part numbers beginning with PSLC8U only)
- BIOS ver. 1.80 (current) or later :: [DOWNLOAD]
Satellite L355D (part numbers beginning with PSLC9U only)
- BIOS ver. 1.80 (current) or later :: [DOWNLOAD]
Satellite Pro L300D (part numbers beginning with PSLC9U only)
- BIOS ver. 1.80 (current) or later :: [DOWNLOAD]
Thanks,
Jim

If you update your bios DO NOT DO IT FROM WITHIN WINDOWS, especially if you are already running WIndows 7. You will more than likely bork your system to an unusable state. Use the create a bootable CD to flash from. It's MUCH safer. Download the file to your hard drive. Double click on it to decompress the archive, then follow the prompts to create the bootable CD with the bios update files.
Also make sure that your battery is installed and fully charged and the AC Adaptor is plugged in.
If you don't bother to post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

I just applied for the gratis Windows 7 upgrade for my Satellite A500ST5601 and have been assigned a 32-bit upgrade. My laptop is 64-bit, and I wonder if Toshiba is making a judgement call (in the interest of best compatibility & performance) or if there is some other reason. Could you clarify?
Thanks very much.

You get the comparable version of Se7en to the version of Vista that came installed on the system. If your system came with 32bit Vista then you'll get 32bit Se7en, etc. It has nothing to do with the system being 32 or 64bit as 99.9% of the systems today have 64bit hardware. And it's Microsft making that decision, not Toshiba. Toshiba is just the distributor.
Without knowing which model you purchased it's impossible to tell if they made a mistake or not.
