No sound from speakers after Windows 7 install on U205-S5057

I followed the upgrade guide to install Windows 7 and installed all drivers in the order instructed. All devices are recognized and correctly installed, as indicated in the control panel (no exclamation point). Still no sound is coming out of the internal speakers. Sound was working fine with XP and Vista. What is going on???

Re: No sound from speakers after Windows 7 install on U205-S5057

I followed these instructions already and installed the recommended audio driver. The problem I'm describing is experienced despite taking those steps. My Windows 7 version is 32 bits.

Any suggestion?

What about the tiny and often overlooked volume-control dial? It's on the right side near the front.

Re: No sound from speakers after Windows 7 install on U205-S5057

Jerry, thx for your help, but went over the basic steps you're suggesting. I think the problem is more serious than that. Of course, the dial is the first thing I checked. The sound card seems to be working since the volume indicator indicates a signal each time I change the volume. The microphone also seems to be "working" since the level changes as I speak. But no sounds comes out from the internal speakers nor from the audio jack.

Before installing Windows 7, everything was working fine. There has to be something going on with the Windows 7 installation, not related to the audio driver since this one seems to install fine and the audio card seems to be recognized by the system.

Of course, the dial is the first thing I checked.

There's no to know until you tell us about things like that. It's probably the most common reason for missing audio.

Some here have recovered the use of devices by starting over and using Toshiba's utility.

Mystery to me.

When you get this one sorted out, I hope you'll come back and share the resolution with us.

Re: No sound from speakers after Windows 7 install on U205-S5057

After about 10 hours of troubleshooting, I finally found a fix. It looks like the Windows 7 install mutes the audio output for some reasons. This problem also seems to be experienced by users doing a fresh Vista install on Toshiba Satellite U200's.

The solution to the problem is a small patch available on the Toshiba support website for Vista users. The file "unmutes" the audio outputs. I did not even have to run it in compatibility mode. You can find the file here: http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/content/support/downloads/util_mute_off_25847B.exe

To Toshiba: it would be a good idea to include this in the Windows 7 Install Instructions for Satellite U200s.

This fix may also apply to other Toshiba models.

Cheers!

Thanks for that information!

Others may want to review the download here.

Is this the mute accessed as follows? Right-click the speaker icon in the Notification area of the taskbar and click Open Volume Mixer. Mute is the speaker icon at the bottom of the window.
