I have windows XP installed on my laptop. When I enter my password for my user name, it goes right to logging off and saving settings. Do I have to use the recovery disk to fix this????

It sounds like you are going to have to do a repair install.
There is a remote possibility that you could run userpasswords2 from a command promote with an xp cd, then boot without a password or reinstall the boot.ini file.
