Problem Upgrading memory Satelite A105

I am trying to upgrade the memory in a Sat. A105. If I put one 1GB stick in it boots fine . 2 sticks cause a blue screen during the boot process. I have switched the 2 sticks and they work correctly individually. I can add the original 512 MB along with one of the new 1GB stick and that works. I have set the Virtual memory settings to "system control". There are no beeps to make me think the hardware does not like the memory. My windows is all updated as well as video drivers.

Any ideas?

Thanks

  1. Specifically WHICH A105 is it?  And yes, it does make a difference.
  2. Exactly what is the brand and model number of the new ram?  And once again, yes it does make a difference.
  3. What bios version are you running?

[ Edited ]

Thanks for the reply.

Model A105-S2141.

Talent T667SB1G/V PC5300 64x8 Ram.

Bios 5.60

The Blue screen pass's quickly so I can not get the  details but I can get the DMP and XML file the system dumps. I am wondering if it is a driver but can't read the blue screen.

During the boot I get the flag and the progress bar , screen clears, after 10 or 15 seconds the blue screen occurs. And as I said either of the sticks works by itself or in tandem with the original stick.

Again thanks

The default for a Stop error is to automatically restart the computer. Let's fix that so you can see the error message.

Open System Properties (sysdm.cpl). On the Advanced tab, click the Settings button at the bottom under Startup and Recovery. Clear the Automatically restart check box.

Look for a message something like this and put it in your reply.

   STOP: 0x000000D1 (0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
   DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If there's a file mentioned, grab that name too.

Re: Problem Upgrading memory Satelite A105

OK, the error is:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}

The windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000):

The system has been shut down.

That looked alittle short from what I was seeing so I shut down and restarted. This is more typical:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen restart the computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall andy anti virus, disk defragmaentaion or backup utilities and check for updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /f to check for hard drive corruption and than restart your computer.

Technical infornmation:

*** Stop: 0x00000024 (0x001902FE,0xF78E67DC,0xF78E64B8,0x804E52AF)

Rebooted again and got the first message.

Rebooted again (3rd time) and got:

Stop: 0x0000008E (0xC000001D, 0x00000007, 0xF76C661C, 0x00000000)

I then did a safe mode boot. I was able to log in under my ID then the failure occured. This time I got:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Stop: 0x0000000A (0x00000014, 0x00000001, 0x804E52AF).

The usual boilerplate was between those.

Thanks again for you assistance

Re: Problem Upgrading memory Satelite A105

More than likely part of the problem is the Talent ram.  It might not have precise and consistant enough timings to run two of them on your laptop.  Laptops are particularly picky about the ram they can use and Talent isn't one of the ones that are known to work well in Laptps.  Kingston KTT line is the only one guaranteed to work properly in a Toshiba laptop (their KVR line is NOT).  KTT533D2/1G is the best option of 1gig sticks to use in that system.

At this point it lloks like either a memory or had drive issue.

To check the ram you need to download the Memtest CD Iso, create the CD using the Burn From Image option, then boot to it and allow it to run through a minimum of 3 complete passes.  If it shows ANY errors whatsoever then you have defective ram.

To test the hard drive determine what brand of hard drive you have.  You can check the Bios/Setup to find out or run SIW or Belarc Advisor.  Go to that manufacturer's support site and download their Self Booting Diagnostic CD ISO image, create the CD using the Burn From Image option (see http://iso.snoekonline.com/iso.htm for more information on doing this), then boot to it and run the most exhaustive tests available.  If you have a Toshiba drive you will need to use the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test as Toshiba doesn't supply their own.
