There are several programs that I found that caused (?) this problem. 

Microsoft Windows Operating System (Microsoft Corporation)

KeNotify Application (Unknown Application)

HwSetup (Unknown)

SVPWUTIL Application (TOSHIBA)

Toshiba Power Saver (Toshiba Corporation)

Microsoft Office 2000 (Microsoft Corporation)

Let me see if I understand this correctly, Christa.

You are saying that when only one of those program startups is checked on the Startup tab of msconfig.exe, the problem exists. That is, it's true for each one of the programs above?

If so, the plot thickens.

Since the problem does not occur in another profile, we can also attack it from that angle by creating a new profile and moving your stuff.

Oh heck Jerry.  I have a feeling I completely misunderstood what the heck I was supposed to be doing.  I'll have to do some things and get back to you.  I'm still having the problem anyway, so I'm not too happy with the info I gave you, it's just not complete enough.  I was just getting frustrated.

It might just be easier to move everything over to a new profile.  How would I go about creating a new profile and making that THE profile.  You know, the Administrator account?

Create a new profile using one with Administrator privileges and give it the same. You can have as many accounts with Administrator privileges as you like.

   Create a user account

Then move your profile over.

   Fix a corrupted user profile

If you use Windows Mail, be sure to import your mail and contacts over to the new profile.

   Working with Windows Mail

Keep the old profile around for a while in case you didn't move everything. Eventually, you can delete it.

Which Satellite A215 do you have? Which Vista?

Hey Jerry, here's something interesting.

I unchecked EVERYTHING in the Startup and it's still having the problem.

What are your thoughts on that?

It's not too surprising. Something in the profile is getting in the way. Probably it's in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER branch of the registry, which is supplied by this hive.

   %UserProfile%\Ntuser.dat

Ok, no worries.  Just wanted to make sure that was still the best thing to do.  This weekend I will work on creating a new user name and moving my stuff over.  Thanks again Jerry!

Jerry, I have been following your advise here and I am in total agreement.

If the problem persist, please review the www.sysinternal.com Process Monitor at this link..

I have used it to track down process (PID)s that should not be running..  I have no idea if this is the case here, so please review the tool and decide if it of value to resolving the problem if it continues.

I am familiar with the tools by Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell. We have been using them on various flavors of Windows NT since 1996. (We skipped Windows 9x here.)

I'm not prepared to introduce these folks to those utilities. Feel free if you like.
