Windows Vista & Windows XP

Alright folks.  I finally have the time to send a message.  Well Jerry's ideas (resetting IE and the Malwarebytes) definitely slowed down this problem a great deal.  I was only having to open ONE window MAYBE twice a day.  Now it's right back to where it was.  I rescanned everything and nothing was found, so the computer's completely clean.  I am thinking of resetting IE again and seeing if that helps again.  I don't know what that means if it DOES, but it's worth a shot.

And as far as the Avast.  I did my research and tried to download it onto the one Acer since my Acers aren't having any problems at all.  I thought that was a good place to start.  Well... it won't download.  I tried it twice I will try again today.  But strike one I'm sad to say.  I certainly can't use something I can't download.  It starts and then just disappears.  I've had this happen before though, so I'm not too concerned for now.  LIke I said I will try it again.

I still say (sorry but I do) that this is a Toshiba problem since all my computers run with the same software, ect.  The only difference is that one Acer has XP.  Everything else is the same.  And it's only the Toshibas doing this.  It's aggrivation.

So anyway, I'm going to go and reset IE and give it another couple days and see what happens.

If it was a Toshiba problem you would see a LOT of other posts about it in this forum and so far you are the only one who has brought it up here.  Seeing how many people are bringing it up in the IE forums tends to confirm it being a Microsoft Problem. 

Anything having to do with the XP system is irrelevant as it uses a different Operating System and a different version of IE8 than your Vista computers do.  That makes comparisons to it meaningless. 

Also unless the Acer that does have Vista uses the exact same hardware chipsets that your Toshiba does then it isn't a relevant comparison either as drivers would be different. 

As for not being able to download Avast, that points to either a configuration problem or a problem with your ISP.

As a diagnostic, Christa, I wonder what happens when you uninstall IE8, i.e., return to IE7.

   How do I uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8?

Well considering I don't haunt these forums and haven't come across anything like my problem (similar but not the same - I'm not saying it's not out there, I just didn't find the exact problem) then how am I to know I'm the only one who posted about it?

Second, I posted to an MS forum and didn't get as many answers as I do here and the answers I'm receiving here are helpful and easy to understand.

Third, I'm pretty sure I said I wasn't concerned about the Avast download problem, so there was no reason to even mention that.  I'll simply check my settings, etc and try it again.

As far as me saying that I'm convinced it's a Toshiba problem and not an IE problem, that's simply my opinion and I'm not sure why you even focused on it.  It was just something I said, that it seems to be that.  I don't care who's problem it is or isn't, I care that I'm able to fix it and I care that I do the correct tests when people have suggestions.  So AGAIN, I will reset the IE settings as soon as I'm able and check it out for a couple days.

I'm trying my best to do all the suggestions that are put to me.  Pardon me if I happen to think out loud and say something that is incorrect or might be "irrelevant" or "meaningless".

Hi Jerry!

Yes I had tried that before.  I didn't see a problem with IE7 but I definitely prefer the features of IE8.  After using IE8 (despite this extreme irritation) when I went back to IE7 I went batty, especially with the way the favorites work.

I removed and installed IE8 two different times and the same thing happened.  Weird.

Would you like me to try it again?  Let me know.

No, I had forgotten that you'd tried it before.

Peculiar that we don't see others with that problem.

Did I ask what happens when you boot into Safe Mode with Networking?

   Advanced startup options (including safe mode)

Strange. I prefer IE7 in that respect. It remembers the last folder I added a favorite too. IE8 forgets.

Ok that's my next step, safe mode with networking.  Am I looking only just to see if it does the same thing or would you like me to look for something else as well?  Just let me know.  I hope to be able to get to this tomorrow, but I'm not sure.
Hmmm... I don't think I've ever noticed that IE8 forgets the folder.  I'll have to check that out.  I prefer that I can have a larger window because the favorites-links are all icons and can be next to the tabs.  My screen's bigger.  Does that make any sense?  LOL!

FYI,

Avast Professional is currently experienceing an error in the download file... I found it on Saturday 17-Oct.

Will report same to Avast on Monday..

Oh so it wasn't my configuration or ISP.  I kinda new that, good to know, thanks Hank.  Normally when I encounter a problem like that I leave it alone for a day or two and go back to it and it usually sorts itself out.
