Re: corrupt files in Vista

okay  Step # 2 outlined in the support forum you linked from Microsoft, does not work.  I have already been to that page.  I have restored My computer to the original out of the box configuration, several times.  Last night after discovering that NexiCore had failed to fix my computer I used a set of restore discs that Toshiba sent me.  These are the same discs they charge $24.99 for.  After using those discs to restore my computer the corrupted files are still present.  Restoring my computer is not going to solve my problem.  My problem is that I have a corrupt Vista Operating System It was corrupt when I took it out of the box.  It was corrupt when I restored it.  It was corrupt when NexiCore reinstalled it.  And it was corrupt when Toshiba made a backup image to send out to people that need to get their restore discs from them instead of making a set of their own.  So the issue is, that I have a corrupt OS and so far nobody at Toshiba has found a way to address the issue infact I was specifically told by 2 of their employees today, Paul and Julian that I would have to get support for my corrupt Vista OS from Microsoft.  Unfortunately Microsoft does not provide customer support for free unless it can verify your product.  And Microsoft is unable to verify my Product assumably because it is corrupt.  Now I hope that that is easier for you to read and understand, and I hope that you have a suggestion other than to restore my computer.  However if you do not, I would like to thank you for your time and efforts.

Re: corrupt files in Vista

Okay  Its the end of the business day, and my case manager left without returning my phone call again.  And there have been no other responses or suggestions on how to fix the problem so I guess im going to go ahead and file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.  If anyone has any other suggestions please feel free to post them or pm me.  Otherwise good luck to you all and thank you for whatever time you may have invested in trying to help me.

Re: corrupt files in Vista

I'm in the same boat. I have a 2 year Toshiba x205. I know what the solution is for both of us. We need to get a Vista install disk. I have been in contact with Microsoft free tech support for upgrading to Vista Service Pack 2 because I can't and have narrowed it down to corrupt Vista system files. Microsoft sent me how to fix them with a Vista Installation Disc. They have a "repair your computer" option when you boot with it. Used to do it with Win 98 and Millenium all the time. And that was with a Packard Bell! But no Vista disc was sent with my laptop.

Re: corrupt files in Vista

Found what we need and instructions on what to do. Micosoft made available a recovery disc that you can't install from but can repair computers like ours. Here is a website with all the info, I am downloading it now, good luck to both of us.

Yes, I've recommended that NeoSmart disc many times here in these forums.

But unless your hard drive is pretty messed up, you shouldn't need to jump through all those current-file hoops.

Re: corrupt files in Vista

Actually, I finally got the recovery disc to work and it brings you to the same limited option menu  that Toshiba has pre-loaded which has NO option to repair Vista files. This TOTALLY sucks. Is Toshiba smarter then Microsoft? That option is available with the retail version of Vista. Reinstall Vista because I have some corrupt files and can't get SP2 to install? I would MUCH rather replace all files with older ones and then install SP2 and update any left overs then go through all the programs I have install in 2 years, locate the disks, downloads and product keys. Everytime I do that, something is lost when I finally get it restored.

Re: corrupt files in Vista

You are preaching to the choir here.  I was alwasy able to push the manufacturer into providing an actual Install Disk if I was willing to push hard enough, but Toshiba seems to be unwilling to work with it's customers in this way.  Sometimes it cost me 20 bucks to get it, but I was ALWAYS able to do so.

And they wonder why so many people use pirated versions of Windows on their systems.

If you don't bother to post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

Re: corrupt files in Vista

I finally got the recovery disc to work  ...  has NO option to repair Vista files.

No surprise there. The OEM's agreement with Microsoft prevents them from offering an installation DVD. When you reach the Recovery Environment (using, for instance, the disc from NeoSmart), it looks like this.

can't get SP2 to install?

Maybe this helps.

Re: corrupt files in Vista

After doing everything possibe to try and get the system files on my laptop fixed so I can install Vista SP2, I am finally breaking down and buying a Vista Home Premium Full disk. I am assured by Microsoft elevated support that will work since t hat will give me the repair Vista option. There may be bad Vista files on the shipped disk. Have you checked to see if your HD has bad sectors? Anyway, another reason to get a Vista Disk while I can is that IF I upgrade to Windows 7 and a program doesn't work, you can create a virtual computer and install another OS and run the program that way if the the compatibility mode doesn't work.
