operating system on satellite A205 S6810

bought this laptop with windows vista home edition already installed.

when i try to install windows XP on it it says your laptop doesnt have a harddisk.

suggestions are welcome...pls help me install XP

Please confirm or us, the XP disc is a new OEM or are you using an upgrade version? When the XP screen appears you should select-Install new OS and reformat conditions for the hard drive.  Not recognizing hard drive, putting this XP concern aside, is the unit properly functioning?  Reset the BIOS to recognize the CD/DVD first, followed by HDD, then reboot.  Do this upon initial boot up via F2 press.

If you are trying to install XP on a machine with SATA hard drives, you will need to provide a driver since XP has no native SATA support.  Since XP will only load the driver from a floppy drive you will either need to get a USB floppy or create an install CD with the drivers on it using nLite or similar.  See THIS link for a procedure.  You may be able to set the BIOS to compatibility mode so check that before going the nLite or floppy route.
